Dress Like a Local: Paris

When I decided to go to Paris, I was ecstatic. I was so excited about everything, from the food to the sights to the people, but as my trip drew closer, I started thinking a lot about how to present myself in the City of Light, and fashion was definitely a must. While there are not ridiculous expectations, the atmosphere in Paris seems to inspire style and grandeur. Therefore, researched Parisian fashion, and came up with a few easy and definite musts for dressing in Paris.

1. Stripes

This may seem stereotypical, but stripes (especially black and white) allow someone to really blend in with the locals. Stripes are also great because they can be dressed both up and down, and mixed with a variety of clothing to be easily reworn throughout your trip.

2. Trench Coats

It was too warm when I was in Paris to wear a trench coat, but in the off season, they make it easy to be stylish and stay warm. They are also less bulky than many other coats, so they are easier to bring on the flight with you.

3. Booties

I. Love. Booties. Especially when traveling, they can be worn with just about everything, and in Paris, a pair of comfortable neutral booties is perfect for walking the streets in style.

4. Black

No color will ever beat black, especially in Paris. If you are ever unsure what to wear in this high-fashion city, all black is an easy way to look stylish, and it can be super comfortble and versatile too!

5. Natural Makeup and Hair

While red lips are excellent to add some boldness to your look, Parisians tend to go for a more natural and put-together appearance in their makeup. Same goes for the hair: Style in Paris focuses on the "natural look," so feel free to wear your messy bun and forego straightening your hair.

6. Simplicity

While a lot of poeple recognize the focus on fashion in Paris, they fail to realize that it focuses a lot more on sophistication and fit than sparkle. In this city, you are better off wearing a comfortable black maxi skirt than a sparkly miniskirt.

7. Scarves

Parisians love scarves, and they are an easy way to accessorize and keep comfortable without going overboard. If you're uncomfortable with the simplicity of traditional Parisian style, adding a scarf will brighten it up without singling you out. Bonus: They also make great pillows to wear on the plane.

8. Cardigans/Light Jackets

Cardigans are awesome in Paris, because they are elegant and add interest to your outfit. Especially if you are traveling in the colder seasons, cardigans and light jackets (blazers especially) will give you that French flair and keep you comfortable.

9. Dresses

Flattering, comfortable dresses are great to wear in Paris, especially in the summer months. When I was in Paris, I wore a simple blue dress that fit in with the fashion and was comfortable on a warm day. When bringing dresses, choose ones that will be formal enough for nice restaurants and churches, but not so formal that you are uncomfortable.
